Horsehair Raku Marine Life Sculpture

$250.00

This horsehair raku vessel is created using a unique firing process. The piece is hand built from coils and slabs and hand textured. The terra sigillata are mixed with various minerals applied in a few coats to bone dry clay and then burnished creating a very smooth surface. The vessel is bisque fired and then fired again at raku kiln. Horsehair were placed on the surface, igniting and leaving black carbon designs on the surface. The mineral gives a luster and subtle sheen that emanates from within the clay. The smoke initiates a chemical process pulling vibrant iridescent pearl like luster to the surface. No two pieces of Raku will ever be alike.

Description

Many of my inspirations come from the ocean and its influence on underwater life. This hand formed art piece is one of my new organic marine ornamental forms. Horsehair raku marine life sculpture shows one-of-a-kind vibrant iridescent emerald green and gold luster created by the smoke initiating a chemical process.

I love experimenting with surface textures. This is my new experimental raku technique. This ornamental marine vessel is created using a unique firing process.  I The hand built it from coils. The terra sigillata mixed with minerals applied in a few coats to bone dry clay and then burnished creating a very smooth surface.  I bisque fired bisque the sculpture and then fired again in a raku kiln.  While it slightly cools down to approximately 1100F, The horsehairs were placed on the surface. They  ignited and leaving black carbon designs. The minerals give a luster and subtle sheen that emanates from within the clay.

Most of my pieces are not formal but rather natural organic forms with imperfections which make them look more unique. The metamorphosis of nature’s forms and how they change with time is very fascinating to me. My imagination often transforms them into new forms, so they are not always replicas.

Handmade ceramics are always more than just tableware or décor. Most of my pieces are not formal but rather natural organic forms with imperfections which make them look more unique. My ceramic vessels are simple and elegant, though bold at the same time.
