“Volcanic Eruption” Ceramic Red Vase

I used a difficult sodium silicate method to create this beautiful surface. After the skinny form was thrown on the wheel, I applied black slip to a white clay body. When the black slip was dried enough, sodium silicate was painted on the outside and then heated very quickly with a heat gun. I expanded the form from the inside out while spinning the wheel causing the outside surface to crack. After the first firing, I applied thin red shino glaze so that it penetrated in cracks and crevices and then cleaned the form leaving red glaze only in the cracks. The vase was glazed inside and high fired again at 2250F.

Ceramic Red Vase | VOLCANIC ERUPTION
The source of my inspiration is nature – its magical beauty, harmony, strength and power. This wabi sabil style red “Volcanic Eruption” ceramic vase has been built using a sodium silicate method to create this beautiful cracked surface. After the skinny form was thrown on the wheel, I applied black slip to a white clay body. When the slip dried enough, sodium silicate was painted on the outside and then heated very quickly with a heat gun. I expanded the form from the inside out while spinning the wheel. As a result the outside surface strted showing many organc cracks. After the first firing, I applied thin red shino glaze so that it penetrated in cracks and crevices. The surface was cleaned leaving red glaze only in the cracks. The vase was glazed inside and high fired.
Ceramics is about tactility, beauty, and subjectivity. This organic nature-inspired vase resembles a Volcanic eruption. The natural and spontaneous cracks retain the elegant quality of nature’s work.
The vase is functional and looks gorgeous with a flower arrangement. You can also use it as a beautiful piece of art in your home decoration.
