Green Onyx is often mistaken for Emerald and Jade but differs in formation and structure. It is formed through the layering of Chalcedony and Quartz in a cryptocrystalline formation. The color of Green Onyx is a rich, deep green and it is primarily found in Brazil, India, Madagascar, Mexico, Peru, and USA. Green Onyx has been part of healing lore since ancient times. Even though Green Onyx was used by prehistoric people for spiritual rites and rituals, it really came into its own during the time of the ancient Greeks.
The word “onyx” comes from the Greek word for fingernail. It was thought that Eros, the Greek god of love and sexuality, clipped his fingernails. When these nails fell to Earth, they turned into Onyx. Some attribute the nails to Venus, but the idea is the same. This helped to make Green Onyx especially valuable to the Greeks.
