I love experimenting with surface textures. This is my new experimental raku technique. This horsehair raku vessel is created using a unique firing process. The piece is hand-built from coils. The terra sigillata mixed with minerals applied in a few coats to bone dry clay and then burnished creating a very smooth surface. The vessel is bisque fired and then fired again at raku kiln. It is pulled from the kiln while glowing red hot.
Horsehairs were placed on the surface, igniting and leaving black carbon designs on the surface. The minerals give a luster and subtle sheen that emanates from within the clay. The smoke initiates a chemical process pulling vibrant iridescent gold, blue and purple-like luster to the surface. No two pieces of Raku will ever be alike.
Dimensions: 9” long by 6.5” wide by 4″ tall.

A totem born of fire and smoke—rugged, organic, and alive with iridescent luster. The surface is prepared with terra sigillata infused with minerals. At its most incandescent—pulled red-hot from the kiln—horsehair is laid across the ceramic body, igniting on contact and leaving smoky black carbon trails that dance across the form like ancient markings. The minerals respond to the heat and smoke, drawing forth a subtle, iridescent sheen—a emerald pearl-like luster that seems to rise from within the clay itself.
Dimensions: 11.5″ tall x 9″ wide x 3.5″ deep.

I like experimenting with surface texture. I like dark or black clays, and I use a lot of oxides. Both give the piece a richer vibrant look, complementing the clay. I called this basket EARTH DROUGHT. It resembles the earth affected by global warming and changed weather conditions.
This basket has a unique organic surfaces. The object is made from black clay and layered black and brown stains and crackle glaze on top creating the dry earth effect. The outside surface was impressed on handmade wood bark mold. The handle is made from stained driftwood and connected by a natural leather cord. I love collecting driftwood. These came from Rialto Beach in Olympia National Park.
Dimensions: 12” long by 4.5” wide (without handles).
This basket is on display at the art shop. Please, contact me if you are inerested in purchasing it.

I felt a deep connection immediately when I started working with this black clay. Every texture and curve reflects the beauty of nature. I called this extra large sculptural bowl DREAM LAKE. A distinctive feature of this sculptural bowl is how it resembles a mountain lake.
Its dark gray earthy color connects it to the earth and rocks symbolizing strength. Carved open spaces let the bright water reflect light through adding movement. The melted sea glass created a unique surface which reminds you of deep lake waters. The Dream Lake Sculpture represents nature’s balance.
Dimensions: 12” wide X 6.25″ tall.
