This hand formed art piece is one of my new organic marine ornamental forms. I love experimenting with surface textures. This is my new experimental raku technique. It took months and many tests to finally nail down this process and make me happy with the results.
This horsehair raku vessel is created using a unique firing process. The piece is hand built from coils and slabs and hand textured. It is hollow inside. The terra sigillata are mixed with various minerals applied in a few coats to bone dry clay and then burnished creating a very smooth surface. The vessel is bisque fired and then fired again at raku kiln. Horsehair were placed on the surface, igniting and leaving black carbon designs on the surface. The mineral gives a luster and subtle sheen that emanates from within the clay. The smoke initiates a chemical process pulling vibrant iridescent pearl-like luster to the surface. No two pieces of Raku will ever be alike.

The combination of brown and white color clays thrown on the wheel give a dynamic flow of color patterns and reminds of marble stone. After the vases were thrown on the wheel and completely enclosed, they were altered and shaped as mountain rocks. The vases were high fired.
Vases sizes vary from : 3.25″ to 3.75″ across.
The vases look beautiful as a group.

This raku sculpture is one of my new underwater life forms. I gather some of my inspiration from underwater creatures and life forms. It reflects my relationship with natural forms.
The raku ceramic decayed underwater life sculpture is loosely based on the form of the sea turtle skeleton. It does not attempt to be an exact replica. The contrast between the white crackled outside surface and matte-crusted hand-carved highly textured inside cavities emphasizes the organic nature of the piece. The design captures the natural fluidity and movement.
This shell is 8” long and 5″ wide.

These red rock vases are reminiscent of serrated Rainbow Mountains in Utah. The combination of two brown and white clays thrown on the wheel gives a dynamic flow of color patterns. After the vases were thrown on the wheel, they were heavily altered and hand-shaped like mountain rocks. While being almost dry they were sanded with sandpaper. The vases were high fired and glazed inside.
Vases measure: 3” – 7” tall by 4.5” – 5” wide.
2 vases are on display at the gallery. Please contact me if you are inerested in purchasing them.

I like experimenting with surface texture. I like dark or black clays, and I use a lot of oxides. Both give the piece a richer vibrant look, complementing the clay. I called this basket EARTH DROUGHT. It resembles the earth affected by global warming and changed weather conditions.
This basket has a unique organic surfaces. The object is made from black clay and layered black and brown stains and crackle glaze on top creating the dry earth effect. The outside surface was impressed on handmade wood bark mold. The handle is made from stained driftwood and connected by a natural leather cord. I love collecting driftwood. These came from Rialto Beach in Olympia National Park.
Dimensions: 12” long by 4.5” wide (without handles).
This basket is on display at the art shop. Please, contact me if you are inerested in purchasing it.
