I have developed this raw organic surface after experimenting for a while. Flat round slabs were covered with a thin coat of sodium silicate. the surface was dried very quickly with a heat gun and stretched in a dome shape creating beautiful spontaneous small and large cracks. Two dome shaped pieces were connected into a stone shape.
The vases were high fired and glazed inside. A few flowers will fit perfectly and will be a unique addition to any decor.
The stone vase is 5” tall by 4.5″ wide.

Horsehair raku ceramic blue luster vase .
The torn, petal-like edges create a sculptural silhouette, while the surface reveals a distinctive interplay of smoke and luster. Shades of blue, violet, and subtle gold emerge through the raku firing process, where horsehair and flame leave permanent traces across the ceramic body. The piece embodies the tension between control and unpredictability inherent in raku: fractured yet balanced, delicate yet enduring. The surface bears the permanent traces of fire and horsehair, transforming rupture into bloom.
The vase measure approximately: 6. 5” tall x 6.5” wide.

These horsehair raku vases is created using a unique firing process. The vases were built by coiling, pinching and impressing clay on a real stone. The terra sigillata applied in a few coats to bone dry clay and then burnished creating very smooth surface. The vessel was fired again at raku kiln and pulled from the kiln while still glowing hot. The horsehair were placed on the surface, igniting and leaving black carbon designs. No two pieces of Raku will ever be alike.
