Horsehair raku ceramic blue luster vase .
The torn, petal-like edges create a sculptural silhouette, while the surface reveals a distinctive interplay of smoke and luster. Shades of blue, violet, and subtle gold emerge through the raku firing process, where horsehair and flame leave permanent traces across the ceramic body. The piece embodies the tension between control and unpredictability inherent in raku: fractured yet balanced, delicate yet enduring. The surface bears the permanent traces of fire and horsehair, transforming rupture into bloom.

These horsehair raku vases are created using a unique firing process. The vases were built by coiling, pinching and impressing clay on a real stone. The terrasigillata applied in a few coats to bone dry clay and then burnished creating very smooth surface. The vessel was fired again at raku kiln and pulled from the kiln while still glowing hot. The horsehair were placed on the surface, igniting and leaving black carbon designs. No two pieces of Raku will ever be alike.
Vases sizes vary from : 4″ to 5″ across.

My weekend walks on Encinitas Moonlight Beach inspired me to do this body of work. This zen-looking stacked stones CAIRN ceramic vase reminds you of California beach stones.remind you of California beach stones. They would be a unique gift and/or a gorgeous addition to your home decor or garden.
I have developed this finishing technique after experimenting for a long time trying to achieve the desired surface. This stoneware vase is hand-built and shaped as beach stones. While still in a wet stage, the stones were rolled in fine crumbs of dry clay of different colors. Then various slips and under glazes were layered on top of the leather hard clay.
This piece represents nature’s balance showing how imperfect forms can be beautiful and full of meaning.
The vase size is: 11 tall by 6″.
