This horsehair raku vessel is created using a unique firing process. The piece is hand built from coils. The terra sigillata mixed with minerals applied in a few coats to bone dry clay and then burnished creating very smooth surface. The vessel is bisque fired and then fired again at raku kiln. it pulled from the kiln while glowing red hot. Horsehair were placed on the surface, igniting and leaving black carbon designs on the surface. The mineral gives a luster and subtle sheen that emanates from within the clay. This raku sculpture is one of my new underwater life forms. I gather some of my inspiration from underwater creatures and life forms. It reflects my relationship with natural forms.
The raku ceramic decayed underwater life sculpture is loosely based on the form of the sea turtle skeleton. It does not attempt to be an exact replica. The contrast between the white crackled outside surface and matte-crusted hand-carved highly textured inside cavities emphasizes the organic nature of the piece. The design captures the natural fluidity and movement.
