TOTEM BORN OF FIRE. Raku horsehair sculpture.

A totem born of fire and smoke—rugged, organic, and alive with iridescent luster. This sculptural ceramic totem reimagines the traditional horsehair firing technique, once reserved for uniform, functional vases, into a celebration of organic irregular forms.

The surface is prepared with terra sigillata infused with minerals. At its most incandescent, horsehairs are laid across the ceramic body. They ignite on contact and leave smoky black carbon trails that dance across the form like ancient markings. This carbon trail is a wild signature of chance, making every piece a singular expression of nature’s untamed beauty. The minerals respond to the heat and smoke, drawing forth a subtle, iridescent sheen—a emerald pearl-like luster that seems to rise from within the clay itself.

No two are alike—each firing is a ritual, each totem a one-of-a-kind expression of nature’s wild beauty.

Raku ceramics by their creative process and their very nature serve only for decorative purposes and are not intended to be used for food.

All of my work is done in my home studio located in beautiful Southern California.
Each ceramic vessel is an original piece of artwork. It is signed by me.
