I used a difficult sodium silicate method to create this beautiful surface. After the skinny form was thrown on the wheel, I applied black slip to a white clay body. When the black slip was dried enough, sodium silicate was painted on the outside and then heated very quickly with a heat gun. I expanded the form from the inside out while spinning the wheel causing the outside surface to crack. After the first firing, I applied thin red shino glaze so that it penetrated in cracks and crevices and then cleaned the form leaving red glaze only in the cracks. The vase was glazed inside and high fired again at 2250F.
This piece was featured in the International Fine Art magazine APERO.

The subtle contrast between sage green and sand color and texture on the main body has a natural rustic feel. The inside surface reminds you of waves splashing over the corals.
