Horsehair raku ceramic blue luster vase .
The torn, petal-like edges create a sculptural silhouette, while the surface reveals a distinctive interplay of smoke and luster. Shades of blue, violet, and subtle gold emerge through the raku firing process, where horsehair and flame leave permanent traces across the ceramic body. The piece embodies the tension between control and unpredictability inherent in raku: fractured yet balanced, delicate yet enduring. The surface bears the permanent traces of fire and horsehair, transforming rupture into bloom.
The vase measure approximately: 6. 5” tall x 6.5” wide.

This hand formed art piece is one of my new organic marine ornamental forms. I love experimenting with surface textures. This is my new experimental raku technique. It took months and many tests to finally nail down this process and make me happy with the results.

This vase was thrown on the wheel. Terra sigillata coats with minerals were applied to dry earthware. The surface was burnished. After the vessel went through first fire, a special resists slip with grog and a thin layer of glaze were applied to the piece on outside surface. The lines were scores through the slip. After raku firing and smoking, the surface was scraped off from the slip exposing beautiful black lines created by smoke. The shiny smooth surface laminates green and bronze pearl colors created by various mineral applications.
Dimensions: 6.5” in diameter by 4″ tall.
Please note: The ceramics and jewelry photography is done with different lighting and backgrounds that might slightly effect the color of the piece.

This raku sculpture is one of my new underwater life forms. I gather some of my inspiration from underwater creatures and life forms. It reflects my relationship with natural forms.
The raku ceramic decayed underwater life sculpture is loosely based on the form of the sea turtle skeleton. It does not attempt to be an exact replica. The contrast between the white crackled outside surface and matte-crusted hand-carved highly textured inside cavities emphasizes the organic nature of the piece. The design captures the natural fluidity and movement.
This shell is 8” long and 5″ wide.
